A student gifted me a large bag of Starburst.

The only way this bag could have been any more perfect was if there were more lemons and fewer strawberry/oranges. Or somehow the bag was ALL tropical strawberry-bananas.

To me they will always be Opal Fruits. They were Opal Fruits in the U.K. seven years before they went to the U.S. under the name of Starbursts.

I like the ‘original’ apple, orange, lemon, lime, strawberry and blackcurrant but also like the ‘Fave Reds’ ones, apple, strawberry, cherry and raspberry.

I lived in England until I was 8, and blackcurrant-flavoured candies are something that I truly miss in my life. There are a few places stateside where you can find UK/European confections, and I’ll snatch up a roll of UK produced jellies in a heartbeat if I know that there are blackcurrant ones in the roll.

Segregation with no violation of civil rights...because Starburst have no civil rights. They have but two rights: the right to be delicious, and the right to be eaten.

As individual flavours, they have the right to be favored by whomever is eating them at the time. I know I am in the extreme minority that prefers lemon above all (save the aforementioned strawberry-banana), but it’s the minority that ensures that lemon still feels valued, still has purpose, still has a place in our confectionary society.

I am fine with this list, simply because lemon is at the top. Orange remains at the bottom of my list, since, upon combining it with lemon, is the weakest of the “lemonade” combinations. (I am aware that as a beverage, strawberry lemonade is infinitely more popular than cherry lemonade. But as a candy combination, I find the that the “heavier” cherry flavor is less overwhelmed by the lemon than strawberry.)

(Side note: I also do this with Skittles. Lemon by itself is tops, grape by itself is second...but grape lemonade? DIVINE. Green apple, on the other hand, can dive into a swimming pool filled with double-edged razor blades and then clean it’s ears with a cactus.)

Actually, this was given to me by a departing eighth grader at the end of last year. I just now got around to ripping the bag open. One of those kids who, over the course of three years, discovered that band really was his family more than anything, and just wanted to thank me.

With a giant basket filled with various candies, tools from Harbor Freight, and gift cards.

I can’t front, sometimes this job is all the feels.
